Juventus and Borussia Dortmund Play Out Thrilling 4-4 Draw in Champions League Opener
In an exhilarating encounter at the Allianz Stadium, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund played out a captivating 4-4 draw in their opening match of the Champions League campaign.
The game saw a total of eight goals scored, all in the second half, setting the stage for one of the all-time great comebacks by Igor Tudor's Juventus team.
The match began with Karim Adeyemi scoring the first goal for Borussia Dortmund in the 52nd minute. However, Juventus, who have never lost when playing their opening game of a European Cup/Champions League campaign at home, refused to be overwhelmed.
Pierre Kalulu provided a cross for Dusan Vlahovic's poacher's finish, reducing the deficit for Juventus. The equaliser came late in the game, courtesy of Lloyd Kelly, who scored an equaliser in the 96th minute, staying onside during his goal as confirmed by VAR.
Kelly's goal was set up by Vlahovic's cross, and the Serbian striker also netted a goal from the bench for Juventus. Prior to Vlahovic's introduction, Juventus had 19 shots in the match for a total of 1.95 expected goals, demonstrating their dominance in the game.
Dortmund, who trailed for only 13.2% of their total match time in the Champions League last season, fought back with two quickfire goals. Yan Couto scored in the 68th minute, followed by Felix Nmecha's goal in the 70th minute, putting Dortmund back in the lead.
However, Juventus showed resilience and netted twice in stoppage time to secure a draw. The game also featured several close calls, with Kobel parrying a sensational Yildiz attempt onto the woodwork, and Maximilian Beier striking the woodwork shortly after the restart.
Ramy Bensebaini scored a penalty for Borussia Dortmund, but it wasn't enough to secure a win for the German side. The draw leaves both teams with one point each in Group H, with Sevilla and Sporting CP also set to play later in the day.
The match was a testament to the exciting football that both teams are capable of playing, and fans can look forward to more thrilling encounters in the upcoming Champions League fixtures.
