As his proud father, Mike, cheered "Let's go, JT!" from the crowd, they shared a heartfelt embrace, marking an unforgettable moment for both.
"That was something really special," Thomas told CNN Sports, reminiscing on his father's emotional embrace. "I'm not really an emotional guy, but reaching that point where I cried – I'd never cried before in that way."
"Probably the thing I'll eternally cherish with him."
Thomas, who started playing golf as a two-year-old and grew up under the tutelage of a golf coach, remembered playing at the 2000 PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club near his hometown Louisville, Kentucky.
At only seven years old, Thomas watched Tiger Woods clinch his fifth major title and received an autograph from Jack Nicklaus. Now, as a member of golf's elite, Thomas felt an unparalleled sense of accomplishment.
"I've invested countless hours into this sport. I've dedicated most of my life to golf and strived to win my first major title. Being able to do it at 24 is nothing short of remarkable."
The triumphant victory sealed Thomas's historic 2022 season, culminating in four tournament victories and setting a record as the youngest player ever to shoot a 59 in the Sony Open on Hawaii.
When Thomas's son made the ball count during a game, his father kept it as a cherished memento. Today, a larger keepsake box was in order.
"Every time he makes the ball count is amazing," Thomas expressed with a smile. "I didn't get as many opportunities growing up as a junior golfer... so adding my first major to that collection is fantastic."
"Winning the PGA Championship deserves its own special category. It's a huge win, not only for us and my team, but also for my career. It's great that we can share this victory together."
Thomas currently ranks sixth in the world, hopeful that his most significant career achievement will catalyze future success.
"I feel like there are no limits," Thomas declared. "If I don't keep putting in the work, nothing will happen."
"I know it's all in my hands. I've wanted it for some time now, and I'm really excited to add another level to my career. Hopefully, it'll open new doors for me."
