German Jusos Chairwoman Calls for Swift Action Against Third Wave

In a recent statement, Jessica Rosenthal, federal chairwoman of the Jusos, has urged Chancellor Angela Merkel to take decisive action against the ongoing third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Rosenthal, expressing a sense of urgency, has called for a clearer strategy to combat the current surge in cases.

Rosenthal believes that the current procedures are not sufficient and the federal-state division is failing in many areas. She has suggested the appointment of a special coronavirus commissioner in the Federal Chancellery to oversee the overall pandemic response. This commissioner, supported by experts, could better prepare decisions, according to Rosenthal.

However, as of August 2025, the current stance of the German Chancellery does not indicate the appointment of such a commissioner. Instead, the focus has shifted towards easing virus curbs and managing the pandemic under established governmental structures. Chancellor Merkel, known for her measured approach, has opposed mandatory vaccinations and emphasised scientific literacy and education during the pandemic's peak.

Rosenthal's statement implies a need for more proactive leadership and suggests a lack of confidence in the current leadership's responsiveness. She has expressed her expectation for immediate action from the chancellor and has questioned the readiness of the conference of state premiers for joint action.

Notably, Karl Lauterbach, a party colleague of Rosenthal, has demanded the second vaccination be postponed. This adds to the complexity of the situation, as the chancellor must balance the opinions of her advisors while making critical decisions.

Rosenthal's statement also implies that the chancellor should not allow for inaction in the current crisis. She expects concrete steps in the upcoming minister-presidential conference, particularly in the vaccination campaign. The chancellor, according to Rosenthal, should not just express intention, but should also take concrete steps to combat the third wave effectively.
