Junior World Wrestling: Tapsya clinches gold in the 57kg category, Srishti earns silver in the 68kg category.
Tapsya, a 18-year-old wrestler from India, has been making waves in the wrestling world. After a strong performance at the domestic selection trials, she went on to win the 57kg title at the World Junior Championships in Bulgaria.
In a close match, Tapsya stunned Japan's defending champion Sowaka Uchida with a score of 4-3, showcasing her defensive skills and flair for attack. This victory was followed by another impressive win at the U20 Asian Championships earlier this year.
Tapsya's recent success continued at the Senior World Championships in Croatia, where she will make her debut from September 13-21. In the lead-up to the tournament, she demonstrated her dominance by clinching the title with a series of takedowns in the second period.
Entering the final with confidence, Tapsya logged one point of passivity in the first period. In the final match, she defeated Norway's Felicitas Domajeva with a score of 5-2.
Two other Indian female wrestlers, Priya Malik (76kg) and Reena (55kg), will also be competing in their finals on Thursday. Priya will take on Nadiia Sokolovska of Ukraine for the 76kg title, while Reena will face Everest Shea Leydecker of the US in the final for the 55kg title.
India has been represented in the 57kg weight division in the last two Olympics through Anshu Malik, but with Anshu not performing well this season, a group of young wrestlers, including Tapsya, have shown potential to take over.
It's worth noting that Tapsya is not the only Indian female wrestler to win the World Junior title; Antim Panghal has won it twice.
In other matches, Priya defeated Evelin Ujhelji of Serbia 10-0 in the semis. However, Srishti lost to Japan's Ray Hoshino 10-0 in the 68kg final.
These impressive performances by Indian wrestlers bode well for the future of the sport in the country. With Tapsya making her debut at the Senior World Championships, the stage is set for more exciting moments in the world of wrestling.
