June Sports Betting Revenue in Ohio Experiences a surge, despite a decline in overall betting volume
Ohio's Thriving Sports Betting Market
Ohio's sports betting market has experienced a significant surge in growth, with a record-breaking $586.3 million wagered through licensed sportsbooks in June 2025 alone. This robust activity has generated approximately $15 million in tax revenue for the state, according to recent reports.
The state's 20% sports betting tax rate, which was decided against raising to 40% in late June, has contributed to the market's sustained growth. As of August 2025, there are 15 active online sportsbooks available in Ohio, including major operators like BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars, bet365, DraftKings, Fanatics Sportsbook, and ESPN BET.
These sportsbooks offer substantial new-user bonuses, with total welcome bonuses in Ohio exceeding $8,000 to $10,600 per user, depending on the platform. The market also sees a significant volume in proposition bets ("props"), which likely account for a large share of wagers, consistent with national trends.
Caesars, for instance, reported a $20.4M handle and $2.1M revenue in Ohio, while Fanatics Sportsbook had a $20.9M handle, $4M revenue, and a 19.1% hold. BetMGM had a $40.1M handle and $5.3M revenue, and bet365 reported a $57.7M handle and $5.9M revenue. ESPN BET captured 3% market share and generated $2.7M in Ohio.
Notably, FanDuel and DraftKings, two of the market leaders, reported impressive figures. FanDuel had a $196.8M handle, $29.8M revenue, and a 15.1% hold, while DraftKings had a $173.9M handle, $23.1M revenue, and a 13.2% hold.
The NBA playoffs drove more than $160 million in operator profits over the final two months of the 2025 season, and with the MLB season ongoing and the football season on the horizon, Ohio's betting market is poised to remain strong in the second half of 2025.
Regulatory discussions continue, with some debate around prop bet restrictions, but no bans have been implemented as of August 2025. Registration and betting can be done remotely via apps from the major operators, and the legal betting age is 21 and over. Ohio officially launched mobile sports betting on January 1, 2023.
Sports betting in Ohio has resulted in a thriving market, with substantial new-user bonuses offered by sportsbooks like BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars, bet365, DraftKings, Fanatics Sportsbook, and ESPN BET. Proposition bets, or "props", constitute a significant portion of the wagers in this market, as indicated by high volumes and strong revenue figures reported by these sportsbooks.
