The euphoria's gonna last, the disbelief's sky-high: For eons, Julian Weber's been among the planet's elite javelin throwers, but the 90-meter mark just wouldn't crack. Until tonight, at the season kickoff, everything clicked.

Julian Weber had to pinch himself post crossing the 90-meter threshold. "Don't know what struck me here tonight. Think I gotta rewatch it, man. Just felt damn fantastic," said the German javelin thrower after a historic jump in Doha. With a heave of 91.06 meters, the Mainz native became the seventh German to break the 90-meter barrier.

"It was flawless with the winning toss and the 90-meter success in the last round. The wind in Doha's ideal for us javelin hurlers. Swing it right, and the javelin's gonna soar like a bat outta hell," said the Olympic sixth-place finisher after a dominant start to the World Championships season on leichtathletik.de. After surpassing his three-year-old personal best of 89.84 meters in the fifth round, Weber snatched the win from Indian Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra (90.23) with his world-leading performance in the final round.

Always the hungry club fourth

Yet, Weber, whose previous career best was 89.54 meters from 2022, had to take a break from training recently. "Last few weeks haven't been peachy for me," said the 30-year-old, who now looks forward to the rest of the season: "Know I got potential, and if I train hard, I'm confident more good things can unfold."

Sports Blockbuster start to the World Championships season Julian Weber finally cracks the javelin throw barrier

The ex-European champion barely missed the podium as a disgruntled fourth place at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023, as well as at the Olympics in 2021 in Tokyo and in Paris. This year's World Championships in Tokyo (September 13-21) could finally end the soldier's disturbing drought.

With his heave, Weber moved up to fifth place in the all-time best list of the German Athletics Association (DLV). The Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha's a lucky charm for German javelin throwers. Eight years ago, Rio Olympic champion Thomas Röhler heaved the javelin 93.90 meters there. The German record of 97.76 meters, set by Johannes Vetter five years ago in Polish Chorzow, remains unbroken.
