Title: Julian Weber smashes his own record, surpasses 90-meter mark

Celebration bursts out as disbelief sets in — for years, Julian Weber has been an elite javelin thrower, but the 90-meter hurdle just wouldn't budge. Until now, at the 2025 season opener, everything just clicked.

Twitchy-eyed and jaw agape, Julian Weber was shell-shocked after making it into the 90-meter club. "I reckon I need a replay. I'm stunned, to be honest," the German javelin prodigy admitted after his long-awaited breakthrough in Doha. His world-leading throw of 91.06 meters propelled him to become the seventh German to soar past the 90-meter barrier.

"The conditions were ideal tonight. The wind and my throw were spot on," said the third-place finisher at the 2022 World Championships. After already setting a new three-year-old personal best of 89.84 meters in the fifth round, Weber slipped past Indian Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra (90.23) in the final round with his latest prodigious throw.

The Unlucky Four

Despite his recent achievement, Weber had found himself struggling in recent weeks. "Training hasn't gone smooth for me," the 30-year-old lamented, optimistic about the rest of the season. "I know I've got potential, and if I work hard, more great things can happen."

The former European champion was on the brink at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023, finishing fourth each time. He also missed his chance at a world-class medal at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo and the 2023 Paris Games. Now, the soldier-athlete hopes to end his four-year wait for a major championship podium spot at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo from September 13-21.

Weber's 91.06m boosted him up to fifth place on the German all-time best list. The Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha has been a lucky charm for German javelin throwers. Eight years ago, Rio Olympic champion Thomas Röhler set a record of 93.90 meters there. The German record of 97.76 meters, set by Johannes Vetter five years ago in Chorzów, Poland, still stands.
