The Armida Quartet, renowned for their focus on the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and their complete recording of Mozart's string quartets, which earned them the OPUS Klassik award, will be gracing the Max-Reger-Hall in Weiden on Friday, November 10, 2022, at 8 pm.

The quartet, consisting of Martin Funda (violin), Johanna Staemmler (violin), Teresa Schwamm-Biskamp (viola), and Peter-Philip Staemmler (cello), will be joined by cellist Julian Steckel, who is known for his exceptional performances of the Schubert C-major String Quintet. Steckel, born in 1982, comes from a family of musicians and has studied with renowned cellists such as Gustav Rivinius, Boris Pergamenschikow, and Heinrich Schiff.

Steckel, who only plays the Schubert quintet with a few ensembles, will also perform György Ligeti's "Solo Sonata for Cello" during the concert. The Ligeti Solo Sonata for Cello is known for its demanding nature and for showcasing many facets of the cello.

The Armida Quartet has a special connection with the Max-Reger-Hall in Weiden, as both Martin Funda and Steckel have fond memories of the venue. The quartet, named after a Haydn opera, considers themselves as enchanting their audience like the sorceress Armida.

In addition to the Schubert C-major String Quintet and the Ligeti Solo Sonata for Cello, the concert will also feature Henri Dutilleux's "Ainsi la nuit," a piece considered one of the most challenging and difficult quartets of its time.

The Armida Quartet is the first chamber music ensemble to be ambassadors of the Verein Orchester des Wandels Deutschland, a climate and nature conservation initiative of members of numerous professional orchestras.

Tickets for the Master Concert can be purchased in Weiden at the Tourismusinfo in the Altes Rathaus and in the Regionalbibliothek. For more information about the Armida Quartet and Julian Steckel, you can visit their official websites or follow them on social media.
