Julia Ruhs' Victory in the Struggle
Julia Ruhs, a prominent figure in German media, has made headlines with her debut book, 'Left-Green Opinion Power.' The 192-page publication, priced at 20 € and published by Langen Müller, has sparked a lively discussion in the journalism industry.
Ruhs, born in 1994 and raised in the Swabian countryside, began her career at Bayerischer Rundfunk as a regional reporter. She has since gained wider recognition, with her column at 'Focus Online' and her own TV show called 'Klar.' In 2021, she spoke out against gender language in the 'ARD-Mittagsmagazin,' and in 2023, she garnered further attention with a tirade against 'illegal immigration' in the 'Tagesthemen.'
In her book, Ruhs argues that conservative journalists can continue with right-wing journalism, while left-liberal journalists feel the need to balance out. She criticizes the overly moralizing and pedagogical attitude of left-liberal media makers and claims that conservatives are less idealistic and prioritize money over joining the journalism industry.
However, the book has not been without criticism. Some argue that it does not offer original insights but instead hits some weak points in a scattershot manner. Others contend that it lacks a necessary analysis for progressive journalists to critically examine why they often lose recent opinion battles.
Ruhs' book also extensively quotes angry citizens' fan mail and writings by like-minded conspiracy theorists. This has led some to question the book's credibility and impartiality.
Moreover, Ruhs refers to the influence and dominance of left-liberal opinion power in media and public discourse. She distances herself from the extreme right to keep her job at Bayerischer Rundfunk, considering the 'FAZ' to be 'center' and the 'taz' to be 'very left.'
Despite its length, the book contains few original thoughts, leading some to feel that it may lead leftists to feel above all criticism due to its untenable and interest-driven theses. The book does argue, however, that stubborn 'reactance' in parts of the audience has achieved more enlightenment than the efforts of left-liberal media makers.
As the debate surrounding Ruhs' book continues, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing tension between conservative and left-liberal journalism in Germany.
