Judicial Scrutiny: Examining the Strain on Democratic Institutions

In a series of events taking place in London, Paris, and New York, a distinguished panel of experts will gather to discuss the role of courts in upholding democratic principles, particularly in times when other checks and balances may be under attack.

The London event, titled "Democratic Institutions Under Pressure: A Judicial Perspective," is scheduled for June 16, 2025, at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The event in Paris will follow on June 19, 2025, and the New York event is set for the Fall of 2025.

The panel will feature Retired US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Retired UK Supreme Court Justice Lord Jonathan Sumption, and Former Member of the French Conseil Constitutionnel Noeëlle Lenoir. The events will be moderated by New York University School of Law Professor Sam Issacharoff.

In London, Luis Vassy, President of Sciences Po, will offer a welcome speech, while Guillaume Tusseau, Professor of Public Law at Sciences Po Law School, will deliver the opening remarks in Paris.

The events aim to discuss the shared responsibility of legislative, executive, and judicial institutions in upholding democratic principles and address concerns about the abilities of institutions, especially courts, to uphold democratic principles in various countries. They will also delve into the question of whether democracy can be saved and the Rule of Law can be restored.

The events are open to all, but registration is required. For more detailed information or to register, please contact the event contact, ecolededroit@our website.

The Program is sponsored by the School of Law, LSE, NYU Law, Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law, and Sciences Po Law School.

While the New York event's schedule is yet to be announced, the Bingham Colloquium 2025 at LSE, titled "Democratic Institutions Under Pressure: Judicial Perspectives," took place on June 16, 2025, from 17:45 to 19:30. The Institute d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences-Po), Ecole de Droit was involved in the Bingham Colloquium, indicating a potential connection to similar events in Paris.

For those interested in related events, the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law at LSE hosts the Bingham Colloquium annually, offering a unique social sciences perspective on law and legal institutions. The Sciences Po Law School in Paris and NYU School of Law in New York are also involved in designing and hosting such events, with a focus on democracy and the Rule of Law.

  1. Topics of discussion at the London, Paris, and New York events, which are focused on democratic institutions, include migrations, war-and-conflicts, policy-and-legislation, and politics, as these issues have a significant impact on upholding democratic principles.
  2. The general news from these events could potentially provide insights on how democratic institutions can address concerns about their abilities to uphold democratic principles in various countries, particularly in times of instability or conflict, a topic of interest if we consider the events' objectives and the panel of experts involved.
