Judge declines to postpone Sean 'Diddy' Combs' trial proceedings
A New York Court Backs Away from Delaying Diddy's Sex-Trafficking Trial
Move over, May 5! Judge Arun Subramanian has put the brakes on a potential two-month delay for Sean "Diddy" Combs' upcoming sex-trafficking trial. Despite defense attorneys' plea for extra prep time due to slow evidence turnover from prosecutors, the judge is adamant – jury selection kicks off as planned.
Why the sudden hurry, you might ask? Well, it appears that our judge isn't buying the excuse that Combs' team needs more time to prepare their defense. After two additional counts were added to the case earlier this month, Subramanian told the attorneys they should be able to pull it together. Prosecutors agreed, opposing the request to move the trial.
Combs, who's now 55, is facing five charges of sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution, and racketeering conspiracy. These allegedly occurred over a 20-year period, and he's been detained in New York City since his arrest last September.
The onus of these accusations rests on claims that Combs and his associates coerced at least three women into sexual acts, sometimes involving male prostitutes and under the influence of drugs. These occasions were infamously known as "Freak Offs." Authorities claim Combs recorded some of these encounters, exerting control over his victims through career and financial opportunities, as well as threats of violence.
On the bench, Subramanian handed down a couple more significant rulings during Friday's session. Firstly, he allowed the alleged victims in the case to testify under pseudonyms, with the exception of Combs' former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. Secondly, he ruled that evidence about prior sexual assault allegations not charged in the indictment would not be admitted at trial.
