Tour of Italy: Roglic Takes the Lead, Ayuso Wins Historic Stage

Primož Roglič has stormed into the lead of the 2023 Tour of Italy, while Juan Ayuso claimed a historic stage win on the first mountain stage.

The Spaniard snatched victory on the grueling seventh stage, pulling off a stunning late attack just 400 meters from the finish on the tough Tagliacozzo climb, ahead of his teammate, Isaac Del Toro, and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers).

Roglič, the hot favorite for this year's Giro and champion in 2023, crossed the line less than four seconds behind Ayuso. However, it was enough for the Slovenian to don the coveted pink jersey.

Ayuso's stunning victory vaulted him into second place in the overall standings, four seconds behind Roglič, with Del Toro occupying third, a further nine seconds back.

Canadian Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech) finished 12th, 11 seconds behind Ayuso, while his teammate and countryman Hugo Houle came in 76th.

In the general classification, Gee sits in 20th position, 1 minute and 34 seconds behind Roglić.

The seventh stage was the most challenging yet, featuring four categorized climbs and a first-category climb to the finish.

"This win is a massive step in my career," Ayuso said bluntly. "It's my fourth Grand Tour, I've been close to victory at the Vuelta. To triumph today, in my first Giro d'Italia, is a huge deal."

Ayuso's calculated attack came as no surprise. "I knew I could only launch one attack and not make two or three in this explosive final," he explained. "Others had attacked before. When I saw my advantage, I gave it everything I had. It was crucial not just to get the victory but also to make up the time lost in the time trial."

Saturday's stage is a 197-kilometer route from Giulianova to Castelraimondo. The Giro culminates in Rome on June 1st.

The Pain and Glory of the Giro

Thursday's stage witnessed several teams endure severe consequences due to a major crash. The 2022 champion, Jai Hindley, suffered a cerebral concussion.

Before the seventh stage, the Israel-Premier Tech team announced that Czech rider Jan Hirt had fractured his right femur in the crash. Hirt completed the stage before being hospitalized.

Juri Hollmann (Alpecin Deceuninck) sustained a "double fracture of the right forearm and a fracture of the right hip," according to his team. Hollmann underwent surgery in Belgium.

Michel Ries of the Arkea-B & B Hotels team did not start the seventh stage.
