"Juan Ayuso criticizes UAE management's authoritarian approach at the start of Vuelta a Espana, sparking a dispute over the ill-timed announcement of his departure from the team"

In a surprising turn of events, Juan Ayuso, the young Spanish cyclist, has decided to end his contract with UAE Team Emirates-XRG a year early, effective at the end of the year. This announcement, made during the first rest day of the Vuelta a España, has cast a shadow over both Ayuso's performance and the entire race.

The decision to make the announcement during the race has been criticised by Ayuso, who believes that it was intended to harm his image. He claims that the team reneged on an unwritten agreement to make the news of his exit official after the Vuelta a Espana ends on September 14.

Joxean Fernández Matxin, the team manager, defended the team's decision to publish the press release, stating that it was made to be transparent about the situation. He also pointed out that Ayuso had a contract until the end of the year and tried to play down the media storm.

Despite the ongoing row, Ayuso has decided to continue racing the Vuelta a Espana. He stated that he wants to finish the race as best as he can, out of respect for his teammates. The drama surrounding Ayuso's departure follows the controversy that emerged at the end of stage 9, where his teammate João Almeida claimed he was isolated during the finale.

The team is still the same, and they will continue racing in the same way according to Matxin. However, the absence of Ayuso leaves UAE Team Emirates-XRG dependent on Almeida for their options in the overall battle for the Vuelta. Ayuso, on the other hand, has accused his team of being 'more like a dictatorship.'

In a surprising twist, Ayuso received half an hour's warning that his departure would be made public via 'friendly media.' He expressed his disappointment over the way the team handled the communication of his departure, claiming it was done without prior warning.

The current situation with Ayuso is overshadowing both Almeida's performance and, to some extent, the entire race. Ayuso, however, maintains that his relationship with his teammates, including Almeida, is good. He also mentioned that next year will be a new start with a new squad for him.

As the race continues, the focus will shift from the competition on the road to the drama off it. The team, and Ayuso himself, will have to navigate this stormy period before they can fully focus on the race once more. Matxin, the team manager, stated that they are trying to focus on the race, specifically the stage finish at the Cat.1 summit fin Larra-Belagua.
