Journalist Assaulted by Clan Associate: Spiegel Editors Reported Attack by Group Member
A Notorious Figure Steps Back into the Spotlight: The Case of Mahmoud Al-Zein

Mahmoud Al-Zein, the self-proclaimed "Godfather of Berlin," has thrown himself back into the public eye once more. Known for his tumultuous life as a crime boss, Al-Zein, who calls himself the "President" or the "Underworld King," is making waves in the German capital yet again.
Recently, a member of Al-Zein's clan found himself in the dock at Tiergarten District Court, facing off against renowned journalist Thomas Heise of Spiegel TV. This altercation was not over a serious criminal charge, but rather a "simple bodily injury" — a punch thrown by the Al-Zein clan member. However, the court proceedings were about much more than just a physical altercation: they were about press freedom, and the line that criminal clans appear to be crossing with impunity.
Trouble in the Berlin CourtroomsIn this case, the defendant is a 42-year-old man, born in Berlin and holding German citizenship. With a long criminal record dating back to 2003, he has not pursued a profession. The man resides in Neukölln with his wife and four children, who range in age from 16 to 19. The family lives off of welfare, and the job center foots the bill for the apartment rent.
He has faced 20 charges throughout the years, including driving without a license, illegal weapon possession, car theft, theft, and bodily injury. In 2022, he received eight and a half years for drug trafficking, serving his time in Bavaria before being released in 2022. He is also well-known for his heavy Arabic accent.
The defendant sits humbly in court, claiming he never intended to strike Heise, stating it was merely a reflex during a moment of agitation. He apologizes for his actions, yet Heise and his legal team do not accept this apology. The video footage from the courtroom corroborates the fact that the attacker acted intentionally, and Heise asserts that he has been aware for two years of the defendant's animosity towards him.
A Warning to the Criminal UnderworldThe judge recognizes the attack on press freedom, agreeing with the public prosecutor's office and sentencing the defendant to ten months' imprisonment without probation. The convicted must bear the costs of the trial.
For Thomas Heise, this verdict is a breath of fresh air, as an administrative court had previously made several mistakes regarding press freedom earlier in the year. Mahmoud Al-Zein's lawyer and the representatives of the immigration authority agreed in December that Al-Zein's re-entry ban would be reduced from seven to four and a half years, allowing him to legally return to Germany on July 1st. With this stepping stone, Al-Zein may be set to claim his place back in Berlin's criminal underworld.

The courtroom brawl between Thomas Heise of Spiegel TV and a member of Mahmoud Al-Zein's clan sheds light on the growing tension between criminal clans and the general-news media, raising concerns about press freedom in politics.
As Mahmoud Al-Zein, the self-proclaimed "Underworld King," returns to Germany, the recent sentencing of a clan member for attacking a journalist underscores the need for increased awareness and understanding of the consequences of crimes and violations against history's pillars, such as freedom of the press, in the realm of crime-and-justice.
