Former Memphis Grizzlies defensive stalwart Josh Allen has faced legal troubles recently. He was arrested on drug charges in Poinsett County, Arkansas, and later pleaded guilty in a federal case involving an NBA health insurance fraud scheme.
Allen's legal issues began with his arrest in Arkansas. Authorities found a package of marijuana on him and, during a search of his car, discovered a cigarette box containing cocaine. He was subsequently charged with two counts of drug possession.
In August 2023, Allen pleaded guilty in a federal case. The case involved a scheme to defraud the NBA's health and welfare benefit plan. Allen was one of several players accused of submitting false claims for medical services.
Allen, known as 'The Grindfather' during his playing days, spent six seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies from 2011 to 2017. He was part of the team's 'Core Four' alongside Ja Morant and others. The Grizzlies retired his No. 9 jersey in March 2023 in recognition of his contributions to the team.
Before joining the Grizzlies, Allen was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2004. He finished his career with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2018. For his legal offenses, Allen was sentenced to community service and three years of supervised probation.
