In a surprising turn of events, Portuguese football club Benfica has appointed José Mourinho as their new coach, 25 years after his initial tenure with the team. This move comes following the dismissal of Bruno Lage, who led the club through a draw against Santa Clara in the last league match.

Benfica currently finds itself in fourth place in the Portuguese league classification with 10 points. However, the team's current standing does not qualify them for the Champions League. The team has one game pending in the Portuguese league.

The vacancy at Benfica was also caused by a defeat at home to Qarabag of Azerbaijan in the Champions League, with a score of 2-3.

José Mourinho, a highly decorated coach, has managed several prominent clubs including Real Madrid, Tottenham, AS Roma, Chelsea, Manchester United, and most recently, Fenerbahce in Turkey. He also coached Benfica in the year 2000 and FC Porto between 2002 and 2004.

During his tenure at Porto, Mourinho won multiple titles including the Primeira Liga, the Portuguese Cup, the UEFA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. He has also won two Champions League titles with Inter Milan and Porto, three 'premier' with Chelsea, and two 'calcio' with Inter. He has been named the best coach of the year by FIFA four times.

Mourinho has also won one Europa League with Manchester United, one Conference League with AS Roma, and one UEFA Cup with Porto.

In his most recent stint, Mourinho joined Benfica in June 2024 for a two-season contract with Fenerbahce. However, he failed to qualify for the Champions League with Fenerbahce, losing (1-0) against Benfica in the last qualifying round.

Mourinho's contract with Benfica includes an opt-out clause for both parties ten days after the last match of the 2025/2026 season. Benfica will face AVS SAD next weekend in the Portuguese league.

This return to Benfica marks an exciting new chapter for both the club and Mourinho, as they aim to regain their former glory and compete at the highest level of football.
