On a vote-heavy Saturday, José Luís Carneiro was elected as the fresh face leading Portugal's Socialist Party (PS), securing a whopping 95.4% of the ballots cast. Facing no opponents, he steps into the shoes left vacant by Pedro Nuno Santos following the disappointing election results.
In a packed poll of 17,100 voters, 16,300 cast their votes in favor of the former Minister of the Interior under António Costa. Unfortunately, 55% of the party members opted to stay away from the polls.

These direct elections in the PS were called following the resignation of Pedro Nuno Santos from his position as secretary-general, after the defeat the PS suffered in the legislative elections, reducing the socialist bench to just 58 deputies and placing them in third position in Parliament.
