Jörg Schmadtke new Managing Director at Hannover 96 - Jörg Schmadtke returns to Hannover 96 as new Managing Director of Sport
Hannover 96 has appointed Jörg Schmadtke as its new Managing Director of Sport. The experienced football executive returns to the club after a decade away, taking over from Marcus Mann, who is leaving for Red Bull Salzburg. His three-year contract begins on January 1, 2026.
Schmadtke previously worked at Hannover from May 2009 to April 2013. During his first spell, he helped assemble the squad that secured a fourth-place finish in the 2010/11 Bundesliga season. After leaving Hannover in 2013, he managed Alemannia Aachen, 1. FC Köln, and VfL Wolfsburg before returning.
His most recent role was Sporting Director at Liverpool FC, a position he held until February 2024. Now, he will oversee both the first team and the 96 Academy. Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Martin Kind, has publicly welcomed the appointment. Schmadtke’s return follows Marcus Mann’s departure. Mann had been under contract with Hannover until summer 2029 but will now join Red Bull Salzburg after four and a half years at the club.
Schmadtke’s contract runs until February 28, 2029. He will lead Hannover’s sporting operations, including player development and first-team strategy. The club expects his experience to strengthen both its senior squad and youth academy.
