Jörg Meuthen successfully chosen as the front-runner for South-West Value Union

Former AfD Leader Bids for Baden-Württemberg State Parliament Seat with Conservative Party

Jörg Meuthen, the former federal chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), has been selected as the top candidate for the conservative Values Union in the upcoming state election in Baden-Württemberg. This announcement was made by the newly elected state chairman of the party, Alexander Mitsch.

The goal of the Values Union, established last year, is to enter the state parliament in Stuttgart and displace the current green-black state government, as stated before the nomination meeting in Vöhringen (Rottweil district).

Meuthen, a 63-year-old economist, entered the European Parliament for the AfD in 2017. However, he left the party at the end of January 2022, citing internal conflicts and the party's growing radicalism. In September last year, he joined the Values Union led by former Verfassungsschutz chief Hans-Georg Maaßen. Since the start of this year, Meuthen has been teaching macroeconomics and financial science at the Kehl University of Applied Sciences.

Meuthen's departure from the AfD and subsequent establishment of Bürgerliche Rechte, a party aiming to present a more moderate conservative alternative to the AfD's radical right-wing stance, is part of his broader strategy to reposition himself politically after distancing from the AfD's extremism and internal disputes.

[Footnote: Jörg Meuthen's new party, Bürgerliche Rechte, was founded with the aim of challenging both AfD and mainstream parties with a platform focusing on liberal-conservative values and citizen rights.]

  1. Jörg Meuthen's new party, Bürgerliche Rechte, is aiming to present a more moderate conservative alternative, and their focus on liberal-conservative values and citizen rights could potentially influence future policy-and-legislation discussions in Baden-Württemberg's state parliament, particularly in regards to migration and war-and-conflicts.
  2. With Meuthen's departure from the AfD and his alignment with the Values Union, which has crime-and-justice and general-news as part of its scope, it remains to be seen how his political stance will affect the party's policy-and-legislation, especially considering his previous experiences in the European Parliament and AfD.
  3. As politicians like Meuthen navigate politics and establish new parties to challenge thestatus quo, the implications for war-and-conflicts, migration, crime-and-justice, and other major issues will likely become prominent topics in the upcoming state election in Baden-Württemberg, receiving extensive coverage in the general-news sector.
