Jordanian-West Bank border crossing closed after deadly assault from Israel

The Allenby Bridge, the sole gateway between the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Jordan, was shut on Friday following an attack the previous day. The bridge, a key route for trade between the two countries, has disrupted normal trade and the ability of more than 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank to reach Jordan and the wider world.

On Thursday, a Jordanian man, who was a driver for humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza, opened fire at Israeli military personnel at the Allenby Bridge border crossing. Two Israeli military personnel lost their lives in the attack. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The closure of the Allenby Bridge has affected the Jordan River crossing in the north, which is now shut. The Rabin crossing in the south, however, remains open, but only for workers. This means that the ability of workers to cross into Israel from the West Bank through the Rabin crossing in the south has not been affected.

The Allenby Bridge is a crucial route for trade between Jordan and Israel. Its closure has disrupted this trade and has implications for the Jordanian economy. The Jordan River crossing in the north and the Rabin crossing in the south were also affected, further exacerbating the disruption.

The Israeli Airports Authority announced the closure and it is currently indefinite, with no timeline for the reopening provided. This indefinite closure affects the daily lives of those in the West Bank, limiting their ability to travel and conduct trade.

The attack at the Allenby Bridge and the subsequent closure have raised concerns about security and stability in the region. As the situation continues to develop, both Jordan and Israel are working to manage the disruptions and maintain peace.
