Jordanian frontier assault claims lives of two Israeli citizens
In a shocking incident, a border crossing controlled by Israel between Jordan and the occupied West Bank was the site of a deadly attack. According to reports, a Jordanian citizen, who had been working as a driver of aid convoys for the past three months, opened fire at the crossing with a firearm.
The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of two Israeli soldiers, aged 20 and 68. Israeli President Izchak Herzog expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. The military wing of the Islamist terror organization Hamas has praised the attack and expressed solidarity with Jordan. However, Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the attack, blaming it on "the echo of Hamas' disinformation campaign."
The Jordanian authorities have launched investigations into the incident, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Amman. The suspected shooter, who reportedly stabbed two men due to a malfunction in his weapon, was eventually neutralized by security forces, typically meaning the attacker was killed.
Last year, an attack by a Jordanian at the border crossing resulted in the deaths of three Israeli employees. In response, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir advised the political leadership to temporarily halt aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip via land from Jordan. Aid continues to reach the Gaza Strip via other routes.
It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of all Jordanians have Palestinian roots. Many Palestinians live in Jordan, and the peace treaty signed between Jordan and Israel in 1994 has maintained relative stability in the region. However, this latest incident has raised concerns about security and cooperation between the two nations.
Jordan has temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border crossing. The aid over this route should be suspended "until the investigation of the incident is completed and improved control procedures for Jordanian drivers are implemented."
The post by the Kassam Brigades on Telegram displayed a burning Israeli tank and a red triangle, which Hamas uses to mark enemy targets. The Jordanian authorities have yet to comment on these claims.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the complex and sensitive nature of the Middle East and the ongoing challenges faced by Israel and its neighbours.
