In a shocking incident, a Jordanian national, reportedly working as a driver for aid deliveries, carried out an attack at the border crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank, controlled by Israel. The attack resulted in the death of two Israeli soldiers, one aged 20 and the other 68.

The attacker, armed with firearms and reportedly involved in stabbing, approached the border crossing in a truck carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza. Upon arrival, he opened fire, prompting immediate response from Israeli security forces. The attacker was subsequently neutralized, typically meaning he was killed.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed condolences to the victims' families, while the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attack as "the result of the echo of Hamas' disinformation campaign." The military wing of Hamas, however, has praised the attack, although direct responsibility attribution in the sources is to the attacker arriving from Jordan.

The Kassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, have displayed a burning Israeli tank and a red triangle (Hamas' enemy marker) in a Telegram message. This act of violence has been condemned by Jordanian authorities as a "violation of the law" and a threat to the kingdom's interests.

In response to the attack, Jordan has temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border crossing. The Israeli Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, has advised temporarily halting humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via the land route from Jordan until the investigation is completed and improved control procedures for Jordanian drivers are implemented.

Around seven percent of all aid deliveries to the disputed area have come through the Jordan-West Bank border crossing since the start of the Gaza conflict. The incident could lead to an extended closure of the border crossing, affecting aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip.

It is worth noting that approximately 30 to 40 percent of all Jordanians have Palestinian roots. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Amman has launched investigations into the incident.

The attack last year, which resulted in the deaths of three Israeli employees, remains a fresh memory for many. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concerns over "abhorrent incitement" in Jordan.

Despite this incident, aid continues to reach the Gaza Strip via other routes. The international community is urging all parties involved to maintain peace and stability, and to prioritize humanitarian efforts over acts of violence.
