Jordanian border under fire, claiming lives of two Israeli civilians
In a shocking turn of events, a Jordanian national, who had been working as a driver of aid convoys for three months, carried out an attack at a border crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank, resulting in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers.
The border crossing, controlled by Israel, has been a site of tension in the past. Last year, an attack by a Jordanian at the same border crossing resulted in the deaths of three Israeli employees.
The Israeli army reported that the truck driver, upon entering from Jordan, opened fire on Israeli security forces. The Jordanian national was subsequently killed in response.
The attack has sparked a wave of condemnation and investigations. Jordan, a country that signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, has temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border crossing with the West Bank. Jordanian authorities consider the incident a violation of the law and a threat to the kingdom's interests.
Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has blamed the attack on Hamas' disinformation campaign and abhorrent incitement in Jordan. The military wing of Hamas, however, praised the attack and expressed solidarity with Jordan. Hamas used a red triangle to mark the attack as an enemy target in a Telegram post.
The Israeli President, Izchak Herzog, expressed condolences to the families of the victims, while the Israeli Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, advised the political leadership to temporarily halt aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip via the land route from Jordan.
It's important to note that around seven percent of all aid for the contested area has come through the border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank since the beginning of the Gaza war. Aid continues to reach the Gaza Strip via other routes.
Jordan has a significant Palestinian population, with estimates suggesting that 30 to 40 percent of all Jordanians have Palestinian roots. The incident has raised concerns about the potential for increased unrest among the Palestinian community in Jordan.
The Jordanian government has yet to comment on the alleged involvement of Hamas in the incident. The situation remains fluid, and updates are expected in the coming days.
