Jordanian border strike results in deaths of two Israelis
In a shocking incident, a Jordanian national, reportedly working as a driver of aid convoys for the past three months, opened fire at the Allenby Bridge border crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank, according to the Israeli army. The attack, which resulted in the death of two Israeli soldiers aged 20 and 68, has been condemned by both Jordan and Israel.
The suspect, who arrived in a truck supposedly carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, was neutralized by security forces at the border crossing. Investigations into the incident have been launched by the Jordanian foreign ministry in Amman, and Jordanian authorities have condemned the incident as a 'violation of the law' and a threat to the kingdom's interests.
The attacker, who was a civilian, reportedly opened fire with a firearm at the border crossing. The Israeli foreign ministry accused Hamas of 'abhorrent incitement' in Jordan, while the military wing of Hamas praised the attack and emphasized their connection to Jordan. Hamas used a burning Israeli tank with a red triangle in a Telegram message to mark enemy targets.
Israel's foreign ministry stated that the attack was the result of Hamas' disinformation campaign. In response, the Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir advised temporarily halting humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via the land route from Jordan. The incident could affect aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip as the border crossing may remain closed for an extended period.
Jordan signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, and this incident could potentially strain relations between the two countries. Approximately 30 to 40 percent of all Jordanians have Palestinian roots, which adds a complex layer to the situation.
Israeli President Izchak Herzog expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and the attack has been widely condemned by both Israeli and Jordanian authorities. Jordan temporarily halted passenger traffic at the border crossing, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind the attack.
