Jordanian border encounter results in deaths of two Israeli individuals
In a shocking turn of events, a border crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank has become the site of a violent attack, resulting in the death of two Israeli soldiers. The suspected attacker, a Jordanian national, was neutralized by security forces.
According to reports, the militant wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, is likely responsible for the attack. The military wing of Hamas has praised the attack, while the Kassam Brigades emphasized their solidarity with Jordan in a Telegram message.
The attack took place at a border crossing controlled by Israel, and it was reported in Jordanian and other Arabic media that the suspected shooter was a Jordanian citizen. The Jordanian authorities have condemned the incident as a 'violation of the law' and a threat to the interests of the kingdom.
The suspected attacker, a civilian, had been working as a driver of aid convoys for three months. In response, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry has advised the suspension of aid until the investigation into the incident is completed and improved control procedures for Jordanian drivers are implemented.
This is not the first time Jordan has faced such a challenge. Last year, a Jordanian attacker killed three Israeli employees at the same border crossing. The incident prompted the Israeli military to report that a truck driver who entered from Jordan opened fire on Israeli security forces, and the Jordanian citizen was killed in response.
Jordan, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, has a significant Palestinian population, with estimates suggesting that 30 to 40 percent of Jordanians have Palestinian roots. Despite the recent events, aid continues to reach the Gaza Strip via other routes.
Israeli President Izchak Herzog has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, and the Israeli Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, has advised the political leadership to temporarily halt humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via land from Jordan. Jordanian authorities have launched investigations into the incident, according to the Foreign Ministry in Amman.
The post by the Kassam Brigades displayed a burning Israeli tank with a red triangle, which Hamas uses to mark enemy targets. This act of solidarity has raised concerns about the ongoing tension and potential for further escalation in the region. As the investigations continue, both Jordan and Israel strive to maintain peace and security for their citizens.
