Jordanian border attack leaves two Israeli lives lost
In a shocking incident, a Jordanian citizen, who had been working as a driver of aid convoys for the past three months, is suspected of killing two Israeli soldiers in an attack at a border crossing controlled by Israel between Jordan and the occupied West Bank.
According to Jordanian and other Arab media, the suspected shooter was a civilian. The Israeli army reported that the attacker was neutralized, typically meaning the attacker was killed. The person's identity has not been disclosed in the available search results.
The attack has sparked condemnation from both Jordan and Israel. Jordanian authorities condemned the incident as a 'violation of the law' and a threat to the interests of the kingdom. Jordanian authorities have launched investigations, and Jordan temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border, as reported by the state news agency Petra.
Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack, stating it was 'the result of the echo of Hamas' disinformation campaign'. The military wing of the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas praised the attack. The Kassam Brigades, Hamas' military wing, emphasized their connection to Israel's neighboring country, Jordan.
Israel's President Izchak Herzog expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. In response, the Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir advised temporarily halting aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip via land from Jordan.
It's estimated that around seven percent of all aid for the Gaza Strip has been delivered through the border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank. The incident has raised concerns about 'abhorrent incitement' in Jordan, according to Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Jordan is home to a significant number of Palestinians, with around 30 to 40 percent of Jordanians having Palestinian roots. The incident has underscored the complexities of the region and the ongoing tensions between Israel and various Palestinian groups.
