Jordanian border assault claims lives of two Israeli individuals
In a shocking incident, a Jordanian man opened fire at a border crossing between Jordan and the occupied West Bank, controlled by Israel, on Tuesday. The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of two Israeli soldiers, and two other men were stabbed due to a malfunction in the attacker's weapon.
The suspected shooter, identified as a Jordanian citizen, had been working as a driver of aid convoys for three months. He was driving a truck carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza when he carried out the assault at the Allenby Bridge crossing. Israeli security forces neutralized the attacker following the incident.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the attack, stating it is the result of Hamas' disinformation campaign. However, the military wing of the Islamist terror organization Hamas has praised the attack. The Kassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, have emphasized their solidarity with Jordan.
In response to the incident, the Jordanian authorities have condemned the attack as a 'violation of the law' and a threat to the kingdom. Jordan has temporarily suspended passenger traffic at the border crossing. The Israeli Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, has advised the political leadership to temporarily halt humanitarian deliveries to the Gaza Strip via land from Jordan. The aid over this route should be suspended 'until the investigation of the incident is completed and enhanced control procedures for Jordanian drivers are implemented,' according to army reports.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Amman has announced investigations into the incident. The Israeli President Izchak Herzog expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. It is important to note that Jordan, which has a significant Palestinian population, with 30 to 40 percent of all Jordanians having Palestinian roots, signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994.
Meanwhile, humanitarian aid continues to reach the Gaza Strip via other routes. The Jordanian authorities and the international community are working to ensure that the incident does not disrupt the ongoing humanitarian efforts in the region.
This tragic incident underscores the complexities and tensions in the Middle East, where peace and stability remain elusive. As investigations continue, the international community hopes for a swift resolution and a return to normalcy in the region.
