Berlin Shines Bright: A Summer of Cultural Vibrancy
Summer 2022 in Berlin was a season of cultural richness and diversity, as the city played host to a myriad of events that showcased its eclectic spirit. From outdoor installations to fashion shows, theatrical events, and music performances, Berlin was a hub of creativity and inclusivity.
Sommerlights 2022, a much-anticipated event, featured an outdoor installation titled FLOW at Dark Matter. The Code's Shape of Us 2.0 fashion show was a standout event, while Time To Shine, the theatrical event series from Terry Saunders and L'aDios, was another highlight.
UK beatboxer Beardyman and the unique drag troupe Drag Syndrome were personal favourites, with Beardyman entertaining crowds at Sommerlights and Drag Syndrome performing at Krake Festival, hosted by Pansy at Berghain.
Joshua Dullroy from Mobile Kino launched a new concept, "Run Lola's Run", a 5K fun-running tour through the city. Nathaniel Flakin's "Berlin By Foot" history tours were well-attended, with the tour of Schöneberg’s Red Island being a favourite.
Lord Spikeheart was a standout artist at Berlin Atonal, with a cacophonous vocal performance and a presence that melded with his unconventional music. The "Berlin On Film: Triple Threat" series with Mobile Kino was also well-attended, featuring screenings of The Teaches of Peaches, Berliner Ballade, and Run Lola Run.
As Autumn approaches, Berlin is gearing up for another culture-packed season, with an emphasis on indoor events such as gigs, exhibitions, theatre, and movie screenings. Notable events for the upcoming summer of 2025 include the Carnival of Cultures, Berlin Fashion Week Summer Edition, Klimafest 2025, Pop-Kultur Festival, Berlin Atonal, Critical Mass Cycling Event, and Open-Air Dance Events.
These events promise to continue Berlin's tradition of showcasing its diverse cultural fabric, from experimental music and fashion to communal celebrations and outdoor dance activities, making summer 2025 vibrant and inclusive across the city. Additionally, a unique section dedicated to German hip hop has been added to the Berlin edition of Hip Hop: Conscious Unconscious.
Pansy's Actual Drag Race took place, while a special edition of the early morning run-workout-breakfast-dance-party was held, in collaboration with RUN-N-RAVE. Organysmo at Monopol was a multimedia audiovisual art experience that made use of the former distillery in Reinickendorf.
