Jonathan Groff's 'Hamilton' Role Unrecognized at Tonys Despite Praise
Actor Jonathan Groff has made his mark on Broadway. In 2024, he won his first Tony Award for 'Merrily We Roll Along'. Groff's performance in 'Hamilton' has also gained recognition, although not with a Tony Award in 2025.
Groff's journey in 'Hamilton' began in 2015 when the musical opened off-Broadway. It then moved to Broadway later that year, showcasing Groff's talent as King George III. Although the 2016 Tony Awards were a triumph for 'Hamilton', with 11 wins including Best Musical, Groff did not receive a nomination for his role.
In 2020, 'Hamilton' was released as a movie, featuring the original Broadway cast, including Groff. Despite his notable performance, the 2025 Tony Awards did not recognise Groff's work in 'Hamilton'. The category for Best Featured Actor in a Musical that year was not awarded to any actor for the role of King George III in 'Hamilton'. Instead, Jak Malone won the award for his role in 'Operation Mincemeat'.
While Jonathan Groff's performance as King George III in 'Hamilton' has been widely praised, it has not been recognised with a Tony Award. Groff's first Tony Award win came in 2024 for 'Merrily We Roll Along', demonstrating his versatility and skill as an actor.
