Jonathan Eligible for 2027: Tinubu Urged to Focus on Governance
Former southeast spokesman of President Bola Tinubu, Denge Josef Onoh, has clarified that former President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutionally eligible to contest the 2027 presidential race. Onoh cited a 2022 Federal High Court ruling in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, which supports this stance.
Onoh advised President Tinubu to focus on national issues such as economic revival, security, and unity, rather than challenging Jonathan's eligibility. He warned Tinubu not to be misled into pursuing legal challenges, as the 2022 judgment stands final and binding under the doctrine of res judicata. The judgment, in Suit No. FHC/YNG/CS/86/2022, declared Jonathan eligible to contest the presidency again and set aside any issue of constitutional term limits.
Onoh argued that the 2018 constitutional amendment does not apply retroactively to Jonathan and cannot disqualify him from running in 2027. He also stated that the Supreme Court has consistently ruled against 'stale' claims that could have been appealed timely.
Onoh's statement clarifies Jonathan's eligibility for the 2027 presidential race. It serves as a reminder for President Tinubu to focus on governance and avoid unnecessary legal disputes. The finality of the 2022 judgment and the inapplicability of the 2018 constitutional amendment to Jonathan's case have been emphasized.
