Jonas Vingegaard Aims for Vuelta a Espana Victory

After a successful run at the 2023 Tour de France, where he finished second overall with eight podium places on stages, Jonas Vingegaard is setting his sights on a new challenge: the General Classification (GC) at the Vuelta a Espana. The race kicks off this Saturday.

Vingegaard and his Visma-Lease a Bike squad for the Vuelta a Espana include Sepp Kuss, Matteo Jorgenson, and Victor Campenaerts. The Danish rider has stated his goal for the Vuelta a Espana is to win the General Classification.

Since his last three-week race victory, the 2023 Tour de France, Vingegaard has won a stage in the 2025 Vuelta a España (Stage 2) and taken the race leader’s red jersey during that event. This marked his first Grand Tour stage win in over 14 months after the 2023 Tour victory.

However, Vingegaard had a tough road to recovery following his early-season crash at Itzulia Basque Country last year. He has been on an individual training camp after the Tour de France, working hard to regain his form.

Vingegaard will start the race as the favourite for victory, but he won't have things all his own way. Sepp Kuss took some time early on in the 2023 Tour de France, potentially presenting Vingegaard with his best opportunity to win a Grand Tour since then.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG will compete in the Vuelta a Espana, led by Juan Ayuso and Tour de Suisse winner Joāo Almeida. Ayuso has raced little since quitting the Giro d'Italia, while Almeida left the Tour de France after a heavy crash and has had his own recovery to work through. Both riders could potentially cause Vingegaard trouble in the Vuelta a Espana.

Other competitors in the race include Ben O'Connor (Jayco AlUla), Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers). Tadej Pogačar is absent from the Vuelta a Espana, making the race even more open.

Fewer riders have done the Tour-Vuelta double than the Giro-Tour double, adding to the challenge that Vingegaard faces. Despite the tough competition, Vingegaard is determined to claim a not-insignificant consolation prize in Spain.

In an interview, Vingegaard said he put in some of the best numbers he had ever seen during the Tour de France. He is confident that his training and recovery have put him in a strong position to compete for the GC in the Vuelta a Espana.

With the race set to start this weekend, the cycling world will be watching to see if Vingegaard can add another Grand Tour victory to his impressive resume.
