Jonas Lüscher honored with the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize for the year 2025
On November 1, 2025, at 4:30 PM, Jonas Lüscher will receive the Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize for his novel "Enchanted Destiny". The award ceremony will take place at the Small House of the Braunschweig State Theatre and will be broadcast live by Deutschlandfunk Dokumente und Debatten on radio and online.
The jury, consisting of Prof. Dr. h. c. Gerd Biegel, Dr. Hanna Engelmeier, Thomas Geiger, Samuel Hamen, Prof. Dr. Anja Hesse, David Hugendick, Dr. Michael Schmitt, Prof. Dr. Julia Schöll, and Dr. Wiebke Porombka (who serves as jury spokesperson), praised "Enchanted Destiny" for its exploration of the rift in our time, specifically the Corona pandemic, in a striking and compelling way.
"Enchanted Destiny" is a dense, material-rich reflection on space and time about the relationship between humans and machines. The wide-swinging, musical periods in the novel create a space of freedom, while the language becomes an aesthetics of resistance, countering the possible withering of the vital in the corset of instrumental reason and the impending suffocation.
The novel is a struggle with the irresolvable ambivalence between the blessings of technological progress and the knowledge of the life-threatening excesses of technical innovation. It explores the possibilities and conditions of art and artists, going beyond the author's own near-death experience.
"Enchanted Destiny" was published by Hanser Verlag in 2025. The Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize, sponsored by Deutschlandfunk and the city of Braunschweig, aims to exemplify the literary achievements published up to the time of the award, and a new book by the prize winner must have been published in the current calendar year.
Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum and Director General of Deutschlandradio Stefan Raue will present the award to Jonas Lüscher during the ceremony. A recording of the award ceremony will be available on Deutschlandfunk on November 29, 2025, at 8:05 PM.
