Jon Batiste comments on Stephen Colbert's departure from The Late Show
Jon Batiste Defends Stephen Colbert Amidst Cancellation of The Late Show
Jon Batiste, the Grammy-winning musician and former bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, has spoken out against the cancellation of the popular talk show, stating that it is a symptom of big money silencing free speech.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Batiste expressed his concern that financial interests and corporate decisions can suppress important voices in media. He emphasised the importance of free speech for artists, particularly in the face of the right price silencing free speech. Batiste believes that monetary power can effectively mute or cancel influential commentators despite the value of their expressions.
Batiste's defense of Colbert follows the announcement of The Late Show's ending after 10 seasons. Batiste served as bandleader and musical director of the show from 2015 to 2022, and he expressed his gratitude to Colbert for his support during his career.
"Being on national television during my 20s meant so much," Batiste said. "I learned the ropes of performing nightly with a band and evolved as an artist in partnership with Stephen."
Batiste also emphasised the importance of sharing the authentic truth of being as artists. "I stand firmly by my former colleague," he said. "Stephen's voice won't be silenced, despite the challenges to free speech."
In addition to his defense of Colbert, Batiste also expressed his belief that an individual's soul cannot be cancelled. He encouraged artists to constantly fight for free speech and to share their truths, even in the face of adversity.
"I believe in the power of art and the importance of free speech," Batiste said. "We must continue to speak our truths and share our voices, no matter what obstacles we may face."
