Johor's Meh Balik Kampus 2026 slashes travel costs for East Malaysian students
Johor's state government has launched the Meh Balik Kampus 2026 initiative to ease travel costs for students studying far from home. The programme includes flight aid, free bus services, and a RM200 incentive—measures welcomed by students in Sabah, Sarawak, and Labuan.
For the first time, Johor students in East Malaysia and Labuan now receive special flight assistance. Previously, only free bus transport was available. The state allocated RM1.4 million to fund the initiative, aiming to cut travel expenses during holidays like Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Students like Abdul Shahid Abdul Muhaimin, studying at Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Labuan campus, say the aid helps them redirect savings toward daily needs. Nur Syafiqah Nor Hisam, another UMS student, calls airfare one of the biggest financial burdens for those in Sabah and Sarawak. The National Johor Students' Association (GAJ) president, Muhammad Irfan Firdaus Md Fauzi, urges students to make full use of the support. This includes the RM200 Johor Students Incentive (IMAJ), free buses, and now flight subsidies. Official figures on how many students benefited from flight aid in 2023 or 2024 remain unavailable in public reports.
The initiative targets two key goals: lowering travel costs and strengthening Johor's human capital development. Students in distant states will now face fewer financial barriers when returning to campus. The programme's impact will become clearer as more students access the aid in coming semesters.
