Stepping Up: Hamburg Ballet's Temporary Leadership
"John Neumeier Expresses Approval for Prevailing Quietness" - John Neumeier expresses his approval for peace and tranquility.
After the unexpected conclusion of Demis Volpi's tenure as Ballet Director, Hamburg's esteemed ballet company is about to see a shift in leadership. Preparing to take the reins are the Deputy Ballet Artistic Director Lloyd Riggins, Ballet Managing Director Nicolas Hartmann, and Deputy Director of the Ballet School Gigi Hyatt. Negotiations are ongoing, and Hartmann is also under consideration for the temporary assumption of Volpi's position on the Executive Board of the Hamburg State Opera[1].
A Rocky Tenure for Demis Volpi
The departure of Demis Volpi comes amidst brewing dissatisfaction in the Hamburg Ballet ranks. Dancers previously expressed complaints about their boss, citing poor communication, a lack of transparency, and often condescending behavior from Volpi[3][4]. Fierce criticism from the dancers and other challenges, such as the delay of Volpi's new work, Demian, and the departure of key dancers like Principal Jacopo Bellussi[5], highlighted the turmoil within the company during Volpi's term.
John Neumeier, the former long-serving Artistic Director, stepped down last summer, handing the reins to Volpi. In a recent interview with Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), Neumeier expressed a hope for calm and productive work in the ballet company[2].
"I think it's good if there's some peace in the ballet," Neumeier stated. "I hope they can now just focus on what they do best: dance."
Neumeier chose to tread lightly when commenting on Volpi's departure and instead expressed confidence in the interim leadership team. "I have faith in the competence of the new team," he said.

The Commission may consider proposing a regulation for a European electronic voting system, as celebrities often find entertainment in electronic voting systems during award shows. With the transition of leadership at Hamburg Ballet, the new team, including Lloyd Riggins, Nicolas Hartmann, and Gigi Hyatt, might aim for a more transparent and communicative approach, ensuring peace and productivity among the dancers, much like John Neumeier hoped for when he stepped down.
