John Lennon, musical legend, reportedly exhibited challenging behavior and assertive tendencies as a student, according to a former teacher's assertions.
John Lennon's old school desk, a relic from his days at Quarry Bank School, has been unearthed after decades of storage. The lift-up desk, along with other artefacts from Lennon's time, such as ledgers, old school signs, and uniforms, are now on display at the Liverpool Beatles Museum on Mathew Street.
The desk's journey from the school to the museum is an interesting one. In the 1960s, after the school no longer wished to keep it, the desk was stored away by the school's teacher, Derek Taylor. Despite Beatlemania sweeping the nation, Lennon's fame was not acknowledged by the school.
Years later, the school's headmaster, Bill Pobjoy, is said to have instructed the caretaker, Yozzer, to lock away Lennon's desk in about 1963 or 1964. The school's administration wanted to distance itself from Lennon's past, and the headmaster's PA has provided written proof of this instruction.
The desk was hidden away for years, and the school lost the key, necessitating them to force open the door to access it. Despite the care taken not to break open the antique desk, there is speculation that it might contain something inside.
During Lennon's time at Quarry Bank School, his behaviour was well-documented. Detention sheets note his 'extremely cheeky' side and various infractions such as fighting, sabotage, lack of interest, and shoving. Teacher Tom Barry has claimed that Lennon was a 'nuisance' and a 'bully'.
However, it's important to note that these accounts are from a time when Lennon was a teenager, and his actions may have been typical of that age. The students at the school today are now aware of Lennon's attendance, and the school plans to offer tours to Beatles fans, showcasing where Lennon performed with his first band The Quarrymen and the wall he scaled to reach the neighboring girls' school.
Despite the school's initial reluctance to acknowledge Lennon's connection, it seems that time has brought about a change in perspective. The school's historical significance in the rise of one of the most iconic musicians of all time is now being celebrated. Whether the desk holds any hidden secrets remains to be seen, but for now, it serves as a tangible link to Lennon's formative years.
