John Lee of Hong Kong discusses productive talks with the newly appointed liaison representative

In just three days, Hong Kong's chief exec, John Lee Ka-chiu, sparked a pair of meetings with the new chief of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government, Zhou Ji. Why the rush? According to Lee, it's all about maintaining open lines of communication and understanding with the powers that be in Beijing, helping him to nail down policies that truly represent Hong Kong's unique situation.

Talking turkey about the latest liaison office director on Tuesday, Lee referred to Zhou as a humble chap with a pragmatic streak. Lee was eager to point out that Zhou took a interest in the city's residents, visiting the homies in his local neighborhood on the weekend, and that he's got a heartfelt respect for Hong Kong. Zhou's commitment to the "one country, two systems" principle is unwavering. Zhou, who took over from Zheng Yanxiong on Friday, also joined forces with the city's national security committee.

On Saturday, the two officials had a face-to-face at Government House.

Zhou, previously the executive deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, and the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the CPC Central Committee, has his work cut out for him keeping an eye on the Central People's Government's dealings in Hong Kong. Zhou has revealed his mission to uphold the "one country, two systems" policy, protect national sovereignty, ensure security, and contribute to Hong Kong's growth as an international hub for innovation and talent. He's also been all about dialogues with local government officials and understanding the needs of the community at large.

So, Zhou's been stepping up his game, planting himself firmly in the thick of things, prioritizing his efforts on fostering a close working relationship with the local government and achieving the city's long-term prosperity and stability. Kudos to the dude.
