John Henry, proprietor of the Red Sox, journeys to Kansas City for a face-to-face meeting with Rafael Devers in an unexpected development.
In a surprising turn of events, the Red Sox upper echelon jetted off to Kansas City to tackle the escalating Rafael Devers predicament last Friday.
John Henry, Sam Kennedy, and Craig Breslow, the team's bigwigs, met up with the squad on the road as tensions mounted between Devers and front-office personnel over the past few days, reports suggest.
Earlier in the week, Devers, initially moved from third base to designated hitter following Alex Bregman's signing, openly expressed his reluctance to slug it out at first base after Triston Casas' season-ending injury.
"I'm not just a ballplayer; they can't expect me to juggle every position under the sun," Devers announced, albeit with the help of a translator, according to the Boston Globe. This shift seemed out of the blue, as Devers was told to leave his glove behind during spring training, with the club informing him that he would be exclusively handling the DH role.
"So right now, it feels like an ill-advised decision on their part to ask me to play another position," Devers explained.
It appears Devers and Breslow, in particular, are rubbing each other the wrong way, as Devers questioned whether Breslow had a gripe with him during a media briefing earlier in the week.
"I'm not entirely sure what [the issue] is with him," Devers said. "He played ball, and I'd like to think he knows switching positions isn't a walk in the park."
Breslow explained to Chris Cotillo of MassLive that Henry and Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke one-on-one with Devers on Friday.
"We felt compelled, considering the recent unfolding of events, to come out here for a heart-to-heart about what drives us as a team and what prioritizes the Boston Red Sox—that is, camaraderie among teammates," Breslow stated.
Rumors swirl that Devers' teammates aren't exactly pleased with his recent actions. Reactions to his postgame rant on Thursday were reportedly less than enthusiastic in the clubhouse, according to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.
