John Hauser named Ohio University’s new head football coach after standout interim season

Ohio University has named John Hauser as its new head football coach. The 45-year-old, previously the team’s defensive coordinator, takes over after leading the Bobcats to a 9-4 season and a Frisco Bowl victory. His promotion follows a successful stint as interim coach.

Hauser stepped in as interim head coach on 17 December after Ohio dismissed Brian Smith. Under his leadership, the Bobcats secured a 40-14 record since 2022, including a bowl win on Tuesday. His performance convinced the university to make the position permanent.

Athletic director Slade Larscheid praised Hauser’s dedication to player development and programme growth. The Columbus native has spent four seasons with the Bobcats and brings experience from previous roles at Miami (Ohio), The Citadel, Wayne State, and Northern Illinois since 2003.

This marks Hauser’s first head coaching job. He replaces Jason Candle, who left Ohio for the UConn Huskies after his own tenure as head coach.

The Bobcats now move forward under Hauser’s leadership after a strong finish to the season. His promotion comes as the team looks to build on recent success. The new head coach begins his role with a proven track record at the university.
