John Elway's golf cart controversy: Notable ex-Broncos player enlists attorney known for defending troubled athletes
Casual Take on John Elway and the Golf Cart Tragedy
John Elway, ex-broncos legend, has gotten himself a Denver-based attorney, Harvey Steinberg, after a heart-wrenching golf cart accident. His longtime friend and agent, Jeffrey Sperbeck, took a tumble off the back of the cart during a bash at California's Madison Club on the 26th of April. Tragically, Jeffrey didn't make it, passing away on the 30th due to the injuries sustained from the incident.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Office was dragged into the messy affair two days later (yep, two days!) and have launched an investigation, now steaming along at top speed. There haven't been any signs of foul play or carelessness from Elway or the others involved. Reports have it that the gang of five in the cart (Elway, his wife, Jeffrey, another dude, and his missus) were on their way after a wild after-party from Stagecoach when Jeffrey plunged off the back.
Cal Fire's the ones who swung into action and transported Jeffrey, already in critical condition, to the Desert Regional Medical Center. Harvey Steinberg, John's feisty lawyer, has represented numerous bigwigs from the sports world, from the Broncos' Matt Russell and Tom Heckert to NBA player Ty Lawson and even the embattled Arizona Cardinals' Matt Prater. Steinberg managed to get the Miami road rage case involving Elvis Dumervil tossed out and once even got an alcohol suspension for Matt Prater thinly reduced.
The Sheriff's Office wasn't troubleshot to attend the scene earlier because, well, it was a medical emergency, according to Cal Fire. The Office said it'd tackle the matter appropriately once the investigation wraps up. So, keep your frocks on, people!
John broke his silence on the matter in an emotional conversation with ESPN. "My dear departed friend, business partner, and agent, Jeff Sperbeck... There are no words to capture the immense mourning I feel," he said, fighting back tears.
Sad news travels fast, and Jeffrey's loved ones released a statement, too. "Our dear Jeff Sperbeck... friend, husband, father, son, and brother par excellence... will be sorely missed by us all," shared the Sperbeecks.
