The John Deere Classic, one of the most anticipated golf tournaments of the season, is set to tee off this week in the Quad Cities, Illinois. The par-71 course at TPC Deere Run, designed by D.A. Weibring, spans a formidable 7,289 yards.

Several high-profile players are vying for the coveted title, with odds reflecting their chances of success. Among them is Aldrich Potgieter, the 20-year-old South African golfer who recently clinched his first PGA Tour victory at the Rocket Classic in Detroit. Despite being a relative newcomer, Potgieter has caught the attention of many, with odds of around **+4000** (40 to 1) making him a notable contender.

Ben Griffin, a two-time PGA Tour winner and the current favorite, is listed at **+1600**. Jason Day, a former world No. 1, follows closely behind at **+2200**. These odds suggest that while Potgieter is not the favorite, he is considered a viable dark horse in the tournament given his recent form and capabilities.

Potgieter's impressive driving distance, currently the best on the PGA Tour, could prove to be a significant advantage on the long holes at TPC Deere Run, where the par-5s measure between 550 and 600 yards. However, Potgieter has made only five of 14 cuts in his rookie season on the PGA Tour, raising questions about his consistency.

Other players to watch include Lucas Glover, the 2021 John Deere winner, who is also at 40-1 for this year's tournament. Si Woo Kim, J.T. Poston, Chris Kirk, Sungjae Im, Davis Thompson, and Michael Thorbjornsen are all at 33-1 or higher.

The course's layout, with its long par-5s and challenging greens, often favours first-time PGA Tour winners, as six of the last 11 champions have been first-timers. Additionally, 14 of the last 15 champions have played at least one previous John Deere Classic, and 8 of the last 15 champions finished in the Top 20 or better in a previous John Deere Classic.

One player who fits this trend is Denny McCarthy, who has finished seventh or better in the John Deere Classic each of the last three years. McCarthy, who excels on bentgrass greens, is currently ranked fourth in Strokes Gained: Putting on bentgrass greens.

As the John Deere Classic approaches, golf fans are eagerly anticipating the exciting competition that lies ahead. With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, the tournament promises to be a thrilling display of golfing prowess.

In the realm of sports, as the John Deere Classic golf tournament is set to begin, college football enthusiasts might also find an engaging contest in the odds. Among the attractive options in this week's sports calendar, the John Deere Classic features remarkable contenders like Aldrich Potgieter, who, despite being a newcomer, has impressive odds of +4000, hinting at a dark horse potential.
