Joy over Olympic Gold: Potsdam now also 'Bob-City' - Johannes Lochner secures double Olympic gold for Germany in bobsleigh triumph

Germany's Johannes Lochner has claimed two gold medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. He triumphed in both the two-man and four-man bobsleigh events, standing as the country's sole gold medallist in the sport this year. His success follows years of training in Potsdam, a city now gaining recognition for its bobsled talent.

Lochner's victories add to a growing list of achievements for athletes based in Potsdam. Georg Fleischhauer, another double gold medallist from the same Olympics, also trains in the city. The group includes Deborah Levi and Laura Nolte, who have previously won bobsled gold.

The athletes work under the guidance of Kevin Kuske, a six-time Olympic medallist and former brakeman. Now a coach, Kuske helps shape the next generation of bobsled competitors.

Potsdam's mayor, Noosha Aubel, publicly celebrated the Olympians in an Instagram post. She called the city 'Bob City' in honour of its bobsleigh success. The post highlighted the local training facilities and the athletes' dedication.

Lochner's double gold reinforces Potsdam's reputation as a hub for bobsled excellence. The city's training programme, led by experienced coaches, continues to produce top-tier athletes. With multiple medallists now linked to the area, its role in winter sports looks set to grow.
