Joey Bosa and the Bill's new defensive rookies shine in their first preseason game against the Giants (a boost/a drop in evaluations)
The Buffalo Bills held their final preseason game at Highmark Stadium on Saturday against the New York Giants. Despite the loss, several backup players showcased their potential.
On offense, wide receiver Tyrell Shavers made a strong case for a roster spot with a 12-yard catch and a 58-yard reception in the first half. His performance was highlighted by a key 58-yard reception late in the first half. However, an underthrown touchdown pass prevented him from a perfect outing.
Third-string quarterback Mike White had a notable performance in the second half, throwing two touchdown passes. His most impressive throw was a 39-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-4 to K.J. Hamler. This performance indicated the backups’ ability to create scoring opportunities despite the team ultimately losing.
Defensively, rookie T.J. Sanders popped early in the game, applying great pressure on Jaxson Dart. Deone Walker, another defensive tackle, had an impressive debut, batting down a pass attempt and applying pressure twice.
However, the Giants' rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart, proved to be a challenge for the Bills' backups. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 154 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown pass. His poise and confidence were evident, and the Giants' coaching staff praised his decision-making.
Despite individual successes, the overall performance was mixed as the Bills lost 34-25, and the Giants led for most of the game. Jackson Hawes, a tight end for the Bills, dropped a pass in the game, while Zach Davidson, another receiver, dropped two passes.
Josh Allen came out in uniform but did not play in the game. Cole Bishop (quad), Curtis Samuel (hamstring), Dorian Strong (undisclosed) and Kaden Prather (hamstring) were all present for pre-game warmups despite injuries.
In sum, the Bills’ backup players had individual highlights offensively and defensively but struggled overall to contain Dart, whose efficient and confident play helped secure a Giants victory. The Bills’ backups demonstrated potential but need improvement to consistently challenge emerging talents like Dart.
