Joel Nystrom locks in four-year, $4.9M extension with Hurricanes
Defenceman Joel Nystrom has secured a long-term future with the Carolina Hurricanes after signing a four-year, $4.9 million contract extension. The deal keeps him with the team until the 2029-30 season, capping off a strong start to his NHL career. Originally drafted in 2021, Nystrom has quickly adapted to North American hockey after five seasons in Sweden’s top league.
Nystrom was picked 219th overall by the Hurricanes in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL draft. Before crossing the Atlantic, he spent five seasons with Färjestad BK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). In the 2024-25 campaign, he led the team’s defencemen in assists (21) and tied for the most points (27), while also scoring six goals in 51 games.
The new contract reflects Nystrom’s rapid progression from Swedish hockey to a full-time NHL role. His defensive skills and offensive contributions have earned him a place in Carolina’s long-term plans. The extension ensures he will remain with the Hurricanes for at least the next four seasons.
