Joe Johnson opts against requesting trade from the Nets organization
The Brooklyn Nets are currently in the midst of a challenging season, with a 12-37 record, and one of the key players, Joe Johnson, is facing an uncertain future. Johnson, who is averaging 11.3 points per game, his lowest scoring average since his second year in the league, is entering the final year of a six-year contract worth $24.9 million.
Despite the team's struggles and his own decline in performance, Johnson has not asked the Nets to trade him. He has stated that he is not seeking the highest bidder for his next contract, but rather wants to ensure the situation is right for him before signing. Johnson has expressed a desire to play "probably just another two, maybe three years, that's it."
Johnson's scoring average has declined in each of his four seasons as a Net. In his rookie season with the team, he averaged 16.3 points per game, followed by 15.8, 14.4, and now 11.3. Additionally, Johnson is shooting just 39 percent from the floor, which is the lowest field-goal percentage of his career.
The Nets, who are currently without a general manager, do not have a clear plan for Johnson's future. Assistant GM Frank Zanin would be responsible for making trades, but it is unclear whether he will be able to find a suitable deal for Johnson. If the Nets don't trade Johnson or buy him out, he will become a free agent on July 1.
There is also the possibility of Johnson being bought out by the Nets, making him a free agent. However, there is no information available about who will sign Johnson's next contract after the 2015/16 season when he becomes a free agent.
Meanwhile, the Nets are expected to activate rookie forward Chris McCullough for games against the Sacramento Kings and Philadelphia 76ers. McCullough, who has missed the entire season due to a knee injury, is not expected to play in the upcoming games, but the team hopes he will get into games next week.
Despite the challenges facing the team, Johnson has not heard any trade rumours this season. He has remained focused on helping the Nets turn their season around, but with the team's struggles and his own declining performance, it remains to be seen whether he will be a part of the team's future.
