Joe Heller: America's Most Successful Self-Syndicated Editorial Cartoonist

Joe Heller, a renowned name in the world of editorial cartooning, has made a significant impact in the United States. Known as the most successful self-syndicated cartoonist in the nation, Heller's work is widely recognised and appreciated.

For over three decades, Heller was an editorial cartoonist for the Green Bay Press-Gazette in Wisconsin. However, in July 2013, he was laid off from the publication. Instead of letting this setback deter him, Heller took the opportunity to start his own syndicate, Heller Syndication, and continue producing several cartoons weekly [2][3][4].

His decision to self-syndicate has been a game-changer, allowing him to maintain a wide readership without relying on traditional syndicates. This independent approach has set Heller apart in the field of editorial cartooning.

Heller's work is regularly reprinted in numerous prestigious publications, such as USA Today, Denver Post, St. Paul Pioneer Press, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek Japan, The Week, and The Washington Post. He is also a regular featured cartoonist for the NKyTribune [1].

Throughout his career, Heller has been honoured with numerous awards for his work. He has won a total of 10 Best of Gannett awards, eight Milwaukee Press Club awards, and two Honorable mentions for the John Fischetti Award [2].

Despite his success, Heller remains humble and focused. He continues to draw several cartoons a week from his home in Green Bay, Wis., where he lives with his wife, Pamela [5].

It's important to note that Joe Heller is not to be confused with Joseph Heller, the American novelist and author of Catch-22.

Joe Heller's independent approach to syndication has allowed him to maintain a substantial readership on social media platforms, where his work is widely shared. His diverse range of topics, often featuring commentary on current events and satirical take on entertainment, has garnered him a strong following.
