Jocelyn Morlock's Arrest Warrant Issued: Seizure Procedure Detailed
On Sunday evening, the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) organized a poignant tribute to the late Jocelyn Morlock, a Manitoban composer who passed away in March 2023. The event, hosted at the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, was more than just a concert; it was a resonant musical ceremony designed to commemorate Morlock's life and work.
The SMCQ spared no detail, creating a spiritual musical ceremony in an intentionallysubtle shift from the usual concert venue. The audience was asked to refrain from applauding between works and before the beginning, and Simon Bertrand, the SMCQ's artistic director, symbolically honored Morlock by lighting a candle at the altar.
The musical continuum featured two commissioned works by Morlock, including "Jocelyn Morlock in Memoriam," played as a solo for oboe by Mélanie Harel. The piece opened and closed the concert, with the first occurrence sung by the church choir and the second coming from the jubé at the back, creating a heavenly echo.
Another commissioned work, "You are a vessel for joy" by Rita Ueda, left a profound and indelible impression. The composition required a small group of singers with bells, a string quartet, and an English horn, expressing Ueda's belief that "the sound of a bell is the voice of God."
The program also included "Sivunittinni" by Tanya Tagaq, a work for a string quartet that evokes the eeriness of throat singing. Furthermore, two works for an alto, flute, and harp trio were presented, composed for the Trio Kalysta.
Noteworthy was "The Uses of Solitude," possibly one of Morlock's last compositions. The piece gradually deployed slow descending motifs and used the harp as an hourglass counting down time, creating a sense of progression, before starting again in a soft, calm manner like a regained serenity. The arrangement of the piece was admirable, leaving a chilling effect when considering Morlock's tragic fate.
The concert was a testament to Morlock's contributions to contemporary classical music and her ability to explore themes through her compositions. The event served as a poignant reminder of her lasting impact on the music scene.
