Job Losses in Ontario Reach a Disheartening 700,000 - indifference evident amidst the crisis?

The Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) has issued a press release, calling on the Ford government to take stronger measures to create and protect good, stable jobs in Toronto. The urgent appeal comes as the unemployment rate in Toronto has risen from 5.0% to 9.0% since April 2023, leaving over 700,000 workers unemployed in the party city.

Over the past two years, the Ontario government has taken no policy response to the growing unemployment in Toronto. The province has lost 40,000 jobs since February, and Toronto's unemployment rate has been higher than Canada's in all but one of the past 65 months. Retail sales in Toronto are also lower than in 2022.

Tom Parkin, known for his research, analysis, and opinion, believes that the NDP should focus on developing and articulating a plan to address Toronto's unemployment crisis. He suggests that the party should publicly spend time listening to worker representatives, business leaders, and experts on how to address unemployment and climb out of the economic crisis in the party city.

However, there are no specific search results indicating which entrepreneurs or organizations from Toronto have spoken out about the growing unemployment since April 2023 or have pledged measures to combat it. The Toronto Board of Trade did not comment on the continued job decline in Toronto in July. The Toronto Star did not report on the July unemployment peak in Toronto, where the rate peaked at 9.0% in July 2025.

The economic strength of Toronto households is a critical issue for working people. Doug Ford's silence on unemployment in the party city is an opportunity for NDP leader Marit Stiles to lead and present a clear and actionable plan to address the unemployment crisis in Toronto. The NDP should demonstrate determination to learn and be focused on what's important to move Toronto back toward full employment.
