New Delhi, India - With the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students' Union (JNUSU) elections 2024-25 counting underway on Sunday, it's clear the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is stealing the show. Claiming a lead in all four central panel posts, ABVP candidates outpace their contenders as approximately 2,475 votes have been counted so far.

The JNU Election Committee reported an impressive voter turnout of around 70% on Friday, with about 5,500 out of the 7,906 eligible students casting their votes. As for the race for President, ABVP's Shikha Swaraj takes the lead with 756 votes, followed closely by Nitish Kumar of the AISA-DSF alliance with 579 votes.

For the post of Vice-President, ABVP's Nittu Gautam stands atop with 710 votes, while Kunal Rai leads in the running for General Secretary with 832 votes. Vaibhav Meena snags the lead for Joint Secretary with 823 votes.

Looking beyond the central panel, ABVP secured 23 out of the 42 available councillor seats across various schools and special centres. Among these victories, ABVP took two out of five seats in the School of International Studies, one in the School of Social Sciences, and others in the School of Biotechnology, Special Centre for Molecular Medicine, and the Special Centre for Nano Science, to name a few.

The ABVP swept all four seats in the School of Engineering and three in the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies, while also triumphing in the Amalgamated Centre, the School of Physical Sciences, the School of Environmental Sciences, and the Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management and Entrepreneurship.

This election year welcomes a four-way race, with AISA aligning with the Democratic Students' Front (DSF) post-split from the SFI. The ABVP and the NSUI-Fraternity alliance also fielded complete panels, making the competition tough and lively.

Originally scheduled for April 18, the elections were delayed as a result of campus violence and vandalism. After the necessary legal proceedings and administrative intervention, polling was rescheduled for April 25, and the counting of votes commenced on April 27, with the concluding ceremony slated for the evening.
