Malaysian Mixed Doubles Pair Reaches First World Tour Final in Macau Open
In a historic achievement for Malaysian badminton, the mixed doubles pair of Jimmy Wong and Lai Pei Jing have made it to their first World Tour final together at the 2025 Macau Open. The pair, currently ranked No. 127 in the world, overcame the sixth-seeded Indonesian duo of Amri Syahnawai and Nita Marwah in straight games, 21-18, 21-16.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Jimmy, aged 23, and Pei Jing, aged 33, who have become the second Malaysian finalists in the Macau Open. Pei Jing, in particular, has a notable history at this tournament, having reached the semi-finals in 2016 with her previous partner, Tan Kian Meng.
The Macau Open, a BWF World Tour 300 event, offers a total prize money of US$370,000. The pair aims to make history by becoming the first Malaysian mixed doubles champions in the tournament’s history, which started in 2002.
Their path to the final has been filled with notable upsets. In the quarter-finals, they defeated the second seeded Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi of China. Earlier, they also overcame the world No. 18 Indian pair, Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto, in the round of 16.
In the other semi-final, Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje are set to face off. The winners of this match will meet Jimmy and Pei Jing in the final.
Meanwhile, Justin Hoh, a Malaysian men's singles player, also made it to the finals by defeating India's Tharun Mannepalli in the semi-finals. The finalists will be determined later today.
The runners-up in the Macau Open will receive US$14,060 (RM60,188). The champions, on the other hand, will receive US$27,750 (RM118,792) for their efforts.
